Guidance notes

Here are some written instructions on how videos to your site.  Videos can be added to the CMS in two ways, in the WYSIWYG editor (for more recent websites) and also using either the YouTube Video or Vimeo Video blocks.  There is a video guide at the bottom of this page which shows how to use the block versions.

You can expand the screenshots by clicking on them.  Tips are given in italics

These notes assume you are already logged into the CMS.

We don't recommend that you upload videos directly to your file manager, this is to prevent the site's database from becoming too large and impacting performance (e.g. slowing your website down).  Instead, upload your video to either YouTube or Vimeo first and get the embed code by clicking 'Share'.

  1. Adding videos using the WYSIWYG editor

  • Click on ‘Edit Mode’ in the top left of the toolbar
  • Either edit or add a content or accordion block (see previous guides)
  • Click on either the YouTube or Vimeo icons in the WYSIWG editor menu
  • Paste the video's url into the first box
  • Select the size using the 'Size' drop down - for example - using 75% or 50% will usually looks better than full width
  • You can also choose to wrap text around the map clicking 'Left', 'Centre' or 'Right' underneath 'Align'
  • Press OK
  • Check you are happy with the placement and size of the video - If you want to change it, Right click on the video and select 'Video Properties'
  • Once you are happy, 'Save' the block

YouTube shorts

Sometimes when trying to add a youtube "short" video you'll get an error saying "The URL you've entered doesn't appear to be valid". The URL given will look similar to the following

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/IMuK68N5fNs

Simply replace the word "short" with "embed" then paste the URL in as normal. The new URL will look like the following

https://www.youtube.com/embed/IMuK68N5fNs

  1. Adding videos using the video block

  • Click the 'Add content' button at the top of the screen.
  • Scroll down to select the 'Video Embed' block and drag this to wherever you'd like the video to appear on the page. (On older sites these might be separate blocks for YouTube and Vimeo)

You can use the search box to easily find the block you are looking for.

  • You can now enter the URL of the video you would like to embed and select the size you would like the player to displayed at. Please note that the video link must be either a YouTube or Vimeo URL in order to work.
  • Once complete click 'Add'. Your video will now appear on the page.

Adding a thumbnail to your video can often be a better idea than using the default thumbnail provided by YouTube/Vimeo.  This enables you to have a higher quality image choose the position yourself.  To do this, add the file to the File Manager and go to 'Choose Image' underneath Thumbnail override.
