Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is an new analytics service provide by Google to enable you to measure traffic and engagement across your websites and apps.  The old Universal Analytics will stop processing data on 1 July 2023.

If you own your Google Analytics property, Frank cannot update it to GA4 unless we are also administrators of the property. In this case, or you prefer to do it yourself, we will ask you to carry out the update to GA4 (detailed below) and send us the updated embed code.

We recommend not connecting your old Universal Analytics, and your new GA4 properties. Google may prompt this, but we have observed inconsistent tracking. The safest way is to have 2 separate properties and embed GA4 independently.

Don’t worry – your old Universal Analytics will remain on the site and keep tracking until July 2023, so analytics aren’t lost in the time between you updating to GA4 and Frank adding the embed on your site.

Steps

  1. Go to your Google Analytics property and go to Admin > GA4 Setup Assistant
  1. At this point:
    • After recent updates, Google has simplified this process. If you are prompted to create and connect a GA4 property, and it takes you to another screen telling you that it is now connected, you are done - your new GA4 will track using your old embed. We still advise that you follow the steps at this link to Check GA4 is tracking.
    • If your Analytics property has already migrated, either by Google or yourself, and you will see a 'Connected Property' already in this section. If this is the case, proceed to Check GA4 is tracking.
    • Otherwise if you are presented with more steps, continue with the below.
  2. Click ‘Get Started’, and in the popup, ‘Create and continue
  3. If you are prompted to choose how to set up a google tag, choose ‘Install a Google tag’ and click Next
  1. You’ll then get an Installation instructions screen. Go to the ‘Install manually’ tab, and copy and paste all of the code in the box to us in an email.
  1. We can then embed your new code. Once we’re happy on our side, we’ll ask you to double-check in your new GA4 dashboard that the analytics are tracking.
  2. As noted, your old Universal Analytics property will remain unless you tell us otherwise. Therefore, both properties old and new will work until July 2023, from which point only the new GA4 property will be tracking.
